From simple lines to living structures.
Although the name “R&B Architecture Studio” may be new (b. 2021), the Portland, Oregon-based firm has 55+ years of combined design experience. The partnership between husband and wife - Ray & Beate - officially began in 2006 after both completed their internships with local firms. Although their body of work and experience is primarily in the residential market, R&B’s portfolio also includes commercial and institutional projects.
R&B Architecture Studio is owned by Beate Ioanide-Culi. Beate’s strength has always been design. She believes that the design of a space or building represents the client. “I believe that if the architect listens carefully, then the design can be a true representation of both the aspirations and needs of the client. I must listen, and then listen again, until the design reflects the client’s vision. And although the vision may be a simple statement, the architect must assemble the numerous puzzle pieces of teamwork, budget, time, efficient design, and aesthetics that projects require.”

The complement to Beate’s strengths of design and passion for business organization is Ray Culi’s strengths of technical expertise, attention to detail, and passion for sustainable design. Ray has more than 25 years of design and project management experience working on single-family, assisted-living and multi-family affordable housing, including many green-certified residential projects. He is committed to sustainability in both his personal life and in his work. “On every project, we as designers of the built environment must take serious and meaningful steps to increase energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and help reverse climate change.”
R&B Architecture Studio recognizes the complexities and many challenges that are inherent in all projects. “We realize the design and construction process can be daunting at times, but the process and rewards for all involved - clients, builders, and designers - can be life-changing.”
